    19:46 | 29/12/2009

A press briefing was held in Hanoi on December 29 by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to review Vietnam’s activities at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) over the past two years.

During the reviewed period, the UNSC took on a large volume of work holding than 1,500 meetings at all levels, adopting 113 resolutions and 165 statements and dealing with complex regional and international issues.

Despite getting involved in the UNSC’s operations for the first time, Vietnam has made thorough preparations and accumulated a wealth of experience from multi-lateral foreign affairs.

Deputy Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh affirmed that Vietnam has fulfilled its mission as a non-permanent member of the UNSC during the 2008-2009 term while showing its stance of independence, self-reliance, construction and cooperation in tackling various issues among UN member countries. Vietnam has positively contributed to the UNSC’s efforts in maintaining peace and ensuring international security.

The UN Secretary General, leaders and key regional partners praised Vietnam’s contributions to the UNSC and expressed their hope that the country will play a greater role in dealing with regional and international issues, particularly when Vietnam assumes the ASEAN Presidency in 2010.

Mr Minh also attributed Vietnam’s success to the effective implementation of policies on external relations policies adopted by the 10th Party National Congress and its efforts to promote peace and ensure stability for national development.

Vietnam’s operations at the top security agency will help enhance its image and status in the international arena and improve bilateral relations with other countries around the world, Mr Minh emphasised.

Vietnam will end its term as non-permanent member at the UNSC on December 31, providing gain valuable experience for its assumption of the ASEAN Presidency in 2010.
