Although he is elderly, each day top-ranking General Vo Nguyen Giap updates news, reads books and conducts trips to visit the old battlefields. August 25 marks his 99th birthday.

When still at work, General Vo Nguyen Giap did not go home until it got completely dark. This photo was taken when he was 83 years old.

Reading books has been his habit for dozens of years, an important method to help him have a deeper understanding in many fields. This photo is General Vo Nguyen Giap’s family in a bookstore.

General Giap’s trips in recent years always include the presence of his wife, Ms Dang Bich Ha. This photo was taken in April 2004 when he returned to Dien Bien Phu for the 50th celebration of the victory.

General Giap talked with lieutenant-general Dong Sy Nguyen, the talented general of the legendary Truong Son Trail.

With the lunar New Year (Tet) festivals, or during his birthday, dozens of delegations from the Party, State, and army come to visit him.

Having been close to the General for 33 years now, colonel Nguyen Huyen (standing), General Giap’s assistant, has always been amazed at the General’s extraordinary working strength. According to the colonel, General Giap regularly works after he listens to the colonel’s reports.

General Giap took a photo with Colonel Tran Hong’s family, the army journalist who has taken over 2,000 photos of General Giap during the past 15 years.
